LEAARC-Approved

What is a LEAARC-Approved Course?

What is LEAARC?

LEEARC is the Lactation Education Accreditation and Approval Review Committee. LEAARC reviews lactation and breastfeeding education that is offered in a variety of settings.

LEAARC is sponsored by the International Lactation Consultant Association (ILCA) and the International Board of Lactation Consultant Examiners (IBLCE). LEAARC cooperates with its sponsors to establish, maintain, and promote appropriate standards of quality for breastfeeding and lactation education and to provide recognition for programs and courses that meet or exceed the minimum criteria. You can read more about LEAARC on their website, www.leaarc.org.

What is LEAARC Approval?

Lactation and breastfeeding courses receive LEAARC endorsement after voluntary review of their instruction and business standards. LEAARC Approval is granted to lactation management courses that provide didactic instruction to students seeking to become International Board Certified Lactation Consultants.

LEAARC approval is voluntary and is a reliable indicator of educational quality based on the fact that the course provider adheres to established criteria and standards of the profession.

A LEAARC-Approved course meets the following criteria,

  • The course has existed for more than one year and has been offered more than one time.
  • The course offers a minimum of 45 contact hours (90 contact hours after Jan 1, 2017) and covers areas of the LEAARC Curriculum.
  • Faculty who teach more than 10% of the course are IBCLC certified.

Providers of LEAARC-Approved courses must comply with the WHO International Code of Marketing of Breastmilk Substitutes.
